Joseph Brant

1742- 1807. Christian Mohawk chief. Born near the Ohio River, he became an Anglican convert to Christianity. The English called his stepfather Brant. When Sir William Johnson was Indian commissioner, he sent Joseph, whose sister he was later to marry, to be educated in Connecticut and afterwards made him his assistant. Chosen chief of the Mohawks, Brant visited England in 1775. There he was lionized and promised to lead 3,000 Indians on the royalist side. Appointed captain in the British army, he was involved in the Cherry Valley Massacre of 1778. In 1785 he was presented at court, and the king gave him an estate at the head of Lake Ontario. He built the first church in Upper Canada.
