Daniel The Stylite

409-493. Syrian ascetic. Born near Samosata, he began his religious life as a monk not far from his home. Twice he visited Simeon the Stylite* on his pillar at Telanissus. When Simeon died, Daniel decided to emulate him. Upon two conjoined pillars he built a small platform on which he lived for the rest of his life. Only once in thirty-three years did he descend, and that was to reprimand an emperor. He was consulted by the patriarch of Constantinople and the emperors Leo I and Zeno; thousands flocked to see and hear him, and he prayed for many sick people. He died at the age of eighty-four and was buried at the foot of his pillars.
