Council of Hippo

Held in 393 with Aurelius of Carthage presiding and Augustine present as a presbyter in the entourage of Valerius of Hippo, it is chiefly important for its conciliatory measures towards Donatism.* It resolved to accept as clergy those Donatists who came over to the Catholic communion cum suis plebibus, but this should not be done before the transmarina ecclesia had been consulted. A breviarium of the canons of Hippo was read at the Council of Carthage in 397 and passed ultimately into general canon law.
