Council of Hatfield

679. This provincial synod or meeting of the bishops and teachers of the English Church at Hatfield (or Heathfield) was summoned and presided over by Archbishop Theodore. It met at the wish of Pope Agatho, who hoped for and secured the church's condemnation of the Monothelite* heresy, its acceptance of the decrees of the first five general councils of the church, and a profession of faith in the Double Procession of the Holy Spirit. At a council in Rome in the following year, Wilfrid* attested this decision of the Church in England as bishop of York and legate of the synod of Britain.
