BYWAYS. Literally “crooked paths.” The word occurs only in Judg.5.6 (kjv, rsv, niv “winding paths”). At certain times, on account of the oppression of the enemies of Israel (Philistines and Canaanites), people dared not walk on the highways, but kept out of sight by using little-known crooked paths.
