Beryllus of Bostra

THIRD century. Reputed heretic. Present knowledge of him comes from Eusebius, Jerome, and Origen. Beryllus lived in Bostra of Arabia Petraea (present Sinai, S Jordan and part of NW Arabia). He was considered a heretic because he did not accept the preexistence and independent divinity of Christ; however, he felt that the divinity of the Father was in Christ during His earthly life. Origen, who at the time was also considered heretical by some, was said to have convinced Beryllus that he should change his mind about Christ and recognize His divinity. This took place at a synod meeting in Arabia in 244.
