Abbreviators

Papal chancery officials who drafted the pope's written statements. The name came from the highly developed system of abbreviations used in papal documents. Pius II (1458-64) fixed their number at seventy; Pius VII (1800-1823) reduced it to seventeen. Their duties were transferred in 1908 to the Collegium Pronotariorum Apostolicorum.
