Welsh Bible

The NT first appeared in Welsh in 1567, translated from the Greek mainly by William Salesbury,* who also collaborated with Richard Davies,* bishop of St. Davids, to produce the Welsh Prayer Book published the same year. Salesbury's NT was accurate and idiomatic, and served as the basis for the complete Bible published in 1588 by William Morgan,* bishop of St. Asaph, aided by Edmund Prys. A revision by Morgan's successor, Richard Parry (1560-1623), probably helped by John Davies (c.1567-1644), his chaplain, was published in 1620. This Bible, still in general use, used the language of the bards and was a formative influence on Welsh prose language.
