Richard William Church

1815-1890. Dean of St. Paul's. Born in Portugal, he spent early years in Italy (1818-28) and in 1833 went to Oxford where he became fellow of Oriel (1838- 52). From early evangelicalism he was moved through the influence and friendship of J.H. Newman* and others to High Churchmanship, in which cause he helped to found the Guardian in 1846. In 1851 he was appointed to the rectory of Whatley in Somerset, and in 1871 was appointed on Prime Minister Gladstone's recommendation as dean of St. Paul, a post he held until his death. Church's writings include Anselm (1870) and a much acclaimed work on The Oxford Movement, Twelve Years, 1833-1845 (1891).
