Praepositinus of Cremona

c.1140-1210. Paris theologian. Born in Lombardy, he studied theology and canon law at Paris, then became a prebend of Mainz Cathedral. He held this post for about ten years (c.1194-1203), during which time he sought to convert the Cathari* to orthodox Catholicism. By 1206 he was chancellor of the University of Paris. His influential Summa Theologica contains the teaching he gave in this period and reveals that as yet Paris had not absorbed the Aristotelian philosophy that was beginning to be accepted in Europe. His other (certain) books include Summa super Psalterium and Summa de Officiis. Possibly he wrote also the Summa contra Haereticos, which is usually attributed to him.
