John Ellerton
1826-1893. English hymnwriter. Educated at Cambridge where he was influenced by F.D. Maurice* but did not identify himself with any party in the Church of England, he held several parochial appointments from 1850. His last living was at White Roding, Essex. Among the hymnals he co- edited were Church Hymns (1871, with W.W. How*); The Children's Hymn Book (1881, again with How); and Ancient and Modern (1875 and 1889). His own eighty-six compositions, which he refused to copyright, were included mostly in his Hymns Original and Translated (from the Latin, 1888). Many are still sung, e.g., “Behold us, Lord, a little space”; “Saviour, again to Thy dear name we raise”; “The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended”; and “Throned upon the awful tree.”
