James William Condell Fegan
1852-1925. English philanthropist. His father was a leader of the Christian Brethren in Southampton. Converted at seventeen as he read in the epistle to the Romans, he was soon involved in Ragged School work in London. At twenty-one he gave up a commercial career to rescue and care for children. His first home for boys was at Deptford. His marriage to Mary Pope in 1889 brought him a loyal partner in this enterprise. Boys were trained in farming and encouraged to go to Canada, and by 1900 nearly 3,000 had emigrated. “Mr. Fegan's Homes” were established at Stony Stratford in 1900 and Goudhurst in 1912, and at present there are family homes for boys and girls in Surrey, Sussex, and Kent.
