Devil's Advocate

(advocatus diaboli). The person appointed by the Roman Catholic Congregation of Rites to contest the claims of a candidate proposed for beatification or canonization before a papal court. Officially called promotor fidei (“promoter of the faith”), he is opposed by God's advocate (advocatus Dei), who supports the proposal.
