86-161. Roman emperor. Succeeding Hadrian and entitled “Pius” by the Roman Senate, he was a mildly progressive ruler, eager to relieve taxation and to foster public building in Italy. He sought to centralize the government with senatorial cooperation. During his principate but not at his instigation Bishop Polycarp of Smyrna was executed.
