What “Mainline” Does and Doesn’t Mean

Growing up in evangelical churches, I often heard about some other branch of Christianity called “mainline,” but I never really knew what that meant. I just knew that “mainline” meant “bad” for some reason. It was a little like the word “communist.” I didn’t really know anything about communism, but I heard the word used a lot and knew that communists must be really evil people bent on destroying everything good and beautiful in the world.

How Did Polycarp's Death Bring Glory to God?

<p>Another story that's very interesting is that of the martyrdom of Polycarp. He had gone to Rome in order to discuss the dating of Easter. Apparently this was one of the early questions that arose within Christianity. When do we celebrate Easter? There were some who continued to celebrate Easter on the 14th of Nissan, using the Jewish calendar. But there were occasions upon which the 14th of Nissan would fall during the course of the week and not on Sunday. There were others, other Christians who celebrated Easter on the Sunday after the 14th of Nissan.
