William Stubbs

1825-1901. English historian and bishop. Born at Knaresborough, he passed from Ripon Grammar School to Christ Church, Oxford, in 1844. In 1848 he was elected a fellow of Trinity, and from 1850 to 1866 he was vicar of Navestock. Between 1864 and 1889 he produced his remarkable editions of English Medieval Chronicles, which made him the outstanding historian of his time, and the person who has laid the foundations of the modern approach to the study of medieval history. In 1866 he was appointed regius professor of modern history at Oxford, and in 1870 he published Select Charters-the history of the English constitution up to Edward I from original documents. This was followed (1873-78) by the Constitutional History of England (to 1485), a work which gave him a worldwide reputation. He became bishop of Chester in 1884 and was translated to Oxford in 1889. Theologically he was a High Churchman and called Pusey “the Master”; politically he was Conservative.
