William Herbert Perry Faunce

1859-1930. Baptist minister and educator. Son of a Baptist pastor, he graduated from Brown University and Newton Theological Institution and in 1884 entered the Baptist ministry. After fifteen years as pastor, he was appointed president of Brown University, where he served until his retirement in 1929. Esteemed as lecturer and preacher, he was the greatest builder in Brown's history. Active in many social causes, he was at various times president of the World Peace Foundation, of the National Education Association, and of the Religious Education Association. A liberalizer, he moderated between modernists and fundamentalists and opened Brown to non- Baptist leadership. He was also noted for his writings, particularly Social Aspects of Christian Missions (1914) and Religion and War (1918). Contemporaries knew him as a poetic, thoughtful, and soft-spoken man.
