William Frederick Arndt

1880-1957. American Lutheran scholar. Born at Mayville, Wisconsin, and educated at various Lutheran seminaries, he was ordained in 1903 and pastored churches in Bluff City, St. Joseph, and Brooklyn. He taught theology at St. Paul's College, Missouri (1912-21), and at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis (1921-51). A keen advocate of Lutheran unity and missions, he wrote Does the Bible Contradict Itself? (1926) and a number of popular apologetical works, a commentary on Luke, a life of Paul, and with F.W. Gingrich edited a Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament (1957). He edited also the St. Louis Theological Monthly (1926-30) and its successor, the Concordia Theological Magazine (1938-50).
