William Caven

1830-1904. Canadian Presbyterian leader. He went to Canada from Scotland in 1847, graduated in theology from Knox College, Toronto, was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry (1852), and did parish work before becoming professor of exegetical theology at Knox in 1866. He was principal there, 1873-1904. Strongly ecumenical, president of the Pan-Presbyterian Alliance (1900-1904), leader in the Evangelical Alliance, and active in missions, he was an architect of the future United Church of Canada. When he was moderator of the general assembly in 1875, there came union with the Church of Scotland, forming the Presbyterian Church in Canada. A number of his papers were published posthumously as Christ's Teaching concerning the Last Things (1908).
