William Caton

1636-1665. Quaker. He was convinced in 1652, when George Fox* first visited Swarthmore Hall on the edge of the Lake District, where Caton was companion to Margaret Fell's son George. Caton soon became a Publisher of Truth, traveling at first in the company of John Stubbs.* They went to Kent and converted Samuel Fisher, the notable Baptist pastor at Folkestone. They were imprisoned briefly at Maidstone. In 1655 they made the first important visit by Quakers to the Continent. Caton spent much of his remaining life in Holland and also visited Scotland. His autobiography, edited by Fox, was published in 1689. A collection of early Quaker letters put together by Caton has apparently now been lost.
