Walter Henry Medhurst

1796-1857. Missionary to China. Born in London and educated at St. Paul's School and Hackney College, he was a trained printer who went first to Penang, then to Batavia, with the London Missionary Society. In 1843 he went to the newly opened Treaty Port of Shanghai, which was to be his base until his death. In addition to evangelistic work, he had already earned a reputation as a Chinese scholar, and became a member of the Bible Society committee commissioned to produce the first union version of the Bible. Medhurst was a prominent figure among early Protestant missionaries to China.
