Walter Arthur Maier

1893-1950. American Lutheran scholar and radio preacher. After graduating from Boston University (1913), he went to Concordia Theological Seminary, was ordained in 1917, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1929. He taught OT language and studies at Concordia from 1922 and established several churches in St. Louis. From 1920 to 1945 he edited the Walther League Messenger. He gained international prominence as the regular speaker of the “Lutheran Hour” from 1935 until the late forties. At his death the broadcast went to over 1,200 stations worldwide. Maier's blend of scholarship and practical devotion enabled him to reach both scholar and common man.
