Vicar General

A term known to have been applied to the pope, but more often used in the Church of Rome to describe the representative of a bishop, usually an archdeacon. In 1535 Henry VIII of England gave the title to Thomas Cromwell* as his representative in church matters. In the modern Church of England the title survives as a separate office only in one diocese; usually it is combined with the function of chancellor of the diocese.
