Tree of Moreh

MOREH, TREE OF (niv tree; nasb, rsv oak ; kjv plain). Mentioned in Gen.12.6 as a place near Shechem where Abraham camped and erected an altar to the Lord. It was probably the tree under which Jacob later buried the amulets and idols his family had brought from Haran (Gen.35.4). In Deut.11.30 there is mention of “the great trees of Moreh” as a landmark near Ebal and Gerizim. Sacred oaks have been known in Palestine from early times. Probably believed to be the abode of ancestral spirits by the Canaanites, they were thought to have oracular powers and may have been tended by priests, as are cedars of Lebanon today.
