Timothy Richard

1845-1919. Missionary to China. Born in Wales, he went to China with the Chinese Evangelization Society in 1870. Later he joined the Baptist Missionary Society. Like Ricci,* he planned to evangelize China through influencing the devoutly religious and the intelligentsia by adapting Christianity to Chinese culture and by education and literature. He hoped to see all phases of China's life transformed. During the 1877 famine in Shansi, Richard lectured to officials and scholars. In 1891 he became secretary of the newly formed Christian Literature Society and started an ambitious publications program. He also became adviser to the liberal reformers, some of whom were friendly toward Christianity. Finally he succeeded in forming a university in Taiyuan, the Shansi capital, with Boxer indemnity money, and remained in charge for ten years.
