Thomas Martin Lindsay

1843-1914. Scottish church historian. Born in Lanarkshire, he was educated at the universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and was ordained in the Free Church of Scotland* in 1869. Three years later he was appointed to the chair of church history at his church's Glasgow college, where he was later (1902) to become principal. Lindsay was a defender of W.R. Smith in the heresy trial (1877-81) that led to the latter's deposition. Among Lindsay's better-known works are Luther and the German Reformation (1900), and A History of the Reformation in Europe (2 vols., 1906-7). He made substantial contributions also to such projects as the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Cambridge Modern History.
