Sir Joseph Barnby

1838-1896. One of the most influential choral conductors of nineteenth-century England. He did much to introduce the works of Bach and Dvorák into England, wrote over 200 hymn tunes, edited five hymnals, and was for years musical adviser to Novello and Company. He is best known today for his tune Laudes Domini for the hymn “When morning gilds the skies.” His numerous anthems and part-songs are in a sweet, romantic idiom that is out of favor today.
