Sir Henry Williams Baker

1821-1877. English baronet and hymnwriter. For most of his ordained life (i.e., from 1851) vicar of Monkland near Leominster, he had distinctly High Church sympathies, and this is reflected not only in his hymns but also in his published tracts and devotional books. The original Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861) owed its existence to him, and to the volume he contributed twenty-five hymns, some original and some translated. His hymns have a freshness, simplicity, and rhythmic ease, the best known being “The King of love my Shepherd is” and “Lord, Thy word abideth.”
