Samuel Rolles Driver

1846-1914. OT scholar. Born at Southampton, he was educated at Winchester and Oxford, with which university he was connected all his working life, and where he succeeded E.B. Pusey in the regius chair of Hebrew (1883-1914). Influenced by the critical approach to the OT of German scholars, he did much to publicize their views in his teaching and writings. Apart from many commentaries on OT books, his works include Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament (9th ed., 1913), Notes on the Hebrew Text and the Topography of the Book of Samuel (2nd ed., 1913), and co- editorship of the Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906). He was a member of the Old Testament Revision Company (1875-84).
