Samuel Macauley Jackson

1851-1912. American Presbyterian church historian, educator, and philanthropist. Educated at College of the City of New York, Princeton and Union seminaries, and the universities of Leipzig and Berlin, he engaged in pastoral work from 1876 to 1880 and thereafter devoted much time and money to philanthropic causes. From 1895 to 1912 he taught church history at New York University for which he refused any salary. He published widely in that field, and from 1908 edited the New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopaedia of Religious Knowledge. He produced several volumes on Zwingli, including Hulderich Zwingli, the Reformer of German Switzerland (1901).
