Samuel Hebich

1803-1868. A founder of the Basel Mission work in India. Born near Ulm in Württemberg, Germany, son of a pastor, he went to Mangalore in 1834, but later moved south to Malabar. Hebich had a remarkable ministry to British soldiers, making converts despite his poor English and eccentric manners. One regiment was termed “Hebich's Own.” At the same time he was truly a missionary to the people of India. He left in poor health in 1859 and died at Stuttgart.
