Robert Henry Wishart Shepherd

1888-1971. Missionary to South Africa. Born near Dundee, Scotland, he was ordained in 1918 and went to South Africa in 1920 as a missionary of the United Free Church of Scotland.* After seven years in Tembuland he moved to Lovedale as chaplain (1927-42) and principal (1942- 55). On his retirement Lovedale passed into government control. He was a gifted writer and edited the South African Outlook (1932-63). As director of Lovedale Press and literary secretary of the Christian Council of South Africa he encouraged African authorship and promoted Christian literature. He was elected moderator of the general assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1959, and was a member of the Monckton Commission which visited Central Africa in 1960.
