Robert Henry Charles

1855-1931. Archdeacon of Westminster and biblical scholar. Born in Cookstown, County Tyrone, and educated at Belfast Academy; Queen's College, Belfast; and Trinity College, Dublin, he was ordained and held curacies in London, 1883-89. He subsequently held several teaching posts, notably in Dublin and Oxford. His primary academic interests lay in the field of intertestamental Judaism. He mastered all the requisite languages for the study of the apocryphal and intertestamental literature, and produced basic critical texts for several of them. This activity culminated in the Oxford edition of The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament in English (1913), of which Charles was general editor and which incorporates much of his own work. These two volumes remain the standard work. It was inevitable that he should take a special interest in apocalyptic, and he produced exhaustive commentaries on the two apocalyptic books of the Bible: Daniel (1929) and Revelation (2 vols., 1920).
