Richard Le Scrope

c.1360-1405. Archbishop of York. Of noble family, after ordination (1377) he became chancellor of Cambridge University (1378). In Rome (1382) he was made auditor of the Curia. Appointed bishop of Coventry and Lichfield (1386), at Richard II's request he was translated to the archbishopric of York (1398). He acquiesced in Richard's abdication (1399) and assisted at Henry IV's enthronement, but growing disillusioned with the new ruler, he took up arms with Northumberland and Bardolf. He composed a manifesto demanding justice, security, and lighter taxation, and gathered an army of discontented citizens. The earl of Westmorland, pretending agreement with the reforms, tricked him into disbanding his followers. He was popularly venerated in N England as St. Richard Scrope.
