Richard Chevenix Trench

1807-1886. Archbishop of Dublin. Educated at Harrow and Cambridge, he was ordained in 1832. He was professor of divinity at King's College, London (1846-58), and dean of Westminster (1856-63) before going to Dublin. There he opposed unsuccessfully the disestablishment of the Irish Church and did much to settle the church after legislation had been passed. A High Churchman of saintly character, he had wide sympathies and versatile scholarship. His numerous works included Notes on the Parables of our Lord (1841), Notes on the Miracles of our Lord (1846), and Lectures on Mediaeval Church History (1877). He retired in 1884.
