Religious Congregations

The term applied to communities which have taken simple vows. They are regulated by the Roman Congregation for Religious, and governed by their own superiors and chapters. Pontifical communities are exempt from episcopal jurisdiction, but superiors of diocesan communities are responsible to their diocesan bishop. Papal permission is required for their establishment, but the rule requiring episcopal permission for their establishment within particular dioceses is now generally suspended.
