Primate

In an episcopally structured hierarchy, the title of one accorded first position or primacy for purposes of administration. It does not appear that the term was used before the seventh century. In the English Church, by ruling of Pope Innocent VI (1354), the archbishop of York was designated “Primate of England,” the archbishop of Canterbury “Primate of All England.”
