Pierre Biard

1567?-1622. Jesuit missionary. Born in Grenoble, France, he entered the Jesuit order in 1583. His studies qualified him for a teaching post in theology at Lyons. In 1610 he was commissioned to join the French mission in Acadia, together with Fr. Enemond Masse. Because of difficulties with Huguenot merchants who rigged the ships, Biard did not arrive at the mission post until 1611. His name is intimately connected with Port Royal (Annapolis Royal), Nova Scotia, and with the founding of St. Saveur (Bar Harbour). He was later captured by the English and made a dramatic escape back to France. The famed Jesuit Relations contains his accounts for the year 1616. His writing is of value to students of Indian ethnology. A defense of his somewhat unconventional missionary endeavors, allegedly written around 1620, was apparently never published. He died in Avignon.
