Philip Henry

1631-1696. Puritan divine. Born in London of Welsh parents, his father being one of the king's gardeners at Whitehall, he was educated at Westminster and Christ Church, Oxford, and joined the Presbyterians. He became tutor to Judge Puleston's children at Emral in Maelor, and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1657. He was ejected from Worthenbury chapel in 1660. Under the 1672 Declaration of Indulgence* his friends secured him a license to hold services at his home at Broad Oak. His diaries (ed. M.H. Lee, 1882) provide a vivid picture of life for the persecuted under the Penal Code. They also cast a revealing light on the piety and strictness of a Puritan home. He was the father of Matthew Henry.*
