Peter Howard

1908-1965. Oxford Group* movement leader. Born at Maidenhead, son of a schoolmaster, he was educated at Mill Hill and Oxford, and worked for the Beaverbrook Press till his conversion to Moral Re-Armament (“Oxford Group”) in 1941 provoked his resignation. Thereafter he farmed in Suffolk, undertaking worldwide journeys for the movement, and after Frank Buchman's* death in 1961 he became its foremost representative. A forthright personality with many admirers and some bitter critics, Howard wrote a large number of books and plays which were performed at the Westminster Theatre, London. Though frequently invoking the names of the three persons of the Trinity to support his crusade for the “moral absolutes” or “ideology” of the movement, no consistent Christian theology can be said to underlie his work.
