Paul William Fleming

1911-1950. American missionary and founder of the New Tribes Mission. Through his mother's prayers and the ministry of Paul Rader he went to Malaya in 1937 to reach inland tribes. Repeated attacks of malaria obliged him to return to the USA, where he tried to stimulate enthusiasm for missions to unreached peoples. In 1942 he started the New Tribes Mission with headquarters in Chicago and sent out a first party to eastern Bolivia. The disappearance of the first five men in the jungle in 1943 did not dampen his ardor. Neither did the fatal crash of the first mission transport plane in Colombia in 1950. Later that year, however, came a second fatal crash on Mount Moran in Wyoming, with Fleming on board.
