Patrick Young

1584-1652. Biblical and patristic scholar. Born in Forfarshire, the fifth son of Sir Peter Young, he studied at St. Andrews (1603) and became librarian to the bishop of Chester. Incorporated at Oxford in 1605, he was ordained and made chaplain of All Souls. He became one of the most proficient Greek scholars of his time. He was librarian to Prince Henry, James I, and Charles I, assisting James in making a Latin translation of his works. He visited Paris in 1617, was made a burgess of Dundee in 1618, and became prebendary and treasurer of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, in 1621. From 1623 he was rector of Hayes, Middlesex, until deposed at the time of the Westminster Assembly (1647). In 1633 Young published from the recently arrived Codex Alexandrinus the editio princeps of the epistles of Clement. He published many other works until interrupted by the Civil War. After Charles I's execution he retired to his son-in-law's house in Essex.
