Old Roman Creed

As early as the end of the second century, this archetype of the Apostles' Creed* was the official creed of the Church of Rome. The earliest extant copy of the creed is found in the Hippolytus's (d.235) Apostolic Tradition, although the creed is first referred to about 150 in Tertullian's De praescriptione. The first writer of the West to give the text with a commentary was Rufinus* in the fourth century. The creed may also be found in Codex Ea (Codex Laudianus 35 of the Bodleian Library at Oxford) which dates from the late sixth or early seventh centuries. The creed no doubt grew out of the confession of Peter (Matt. 16:16), which furnished its nucleus.
