Nicholas Udall

1505-1556. English scholar and dramatist. Going from Winchester College to Oxford in 1520, he gained a reputation for making Latin verses and for being favorably disposed to Lutheranism. In 1534 he was appointed headmaster of Eton, but was removed seven years later for “unnatural crime.” After some time in jail he held benefices in the Church of England. He translated the first volume of Erasmus's NT into English which was published in 1548. He also wrote a tract against the rebels who opposed the first Edwardian Book of Common Prayer. When Mary Tudor came to the throne he reverted to Roman Catholicism, and later became head of Westminster School, but died shortly afterward. His best-known work is a play Ralph Roister Doister, probably written for presentation by the students at Eton.
