Mount of Beatitudes

MOUNT OF BEATITUDES. The site of the Sermon on the Mount (Matt.5.1-Matt.5.48-Matt.7.1-Matt.7.29; Luke.6.20-Luke.6.49), which contains the Beatitudes, is not identified in the Gospels. Tradition has identified it with Karn Hattin, near Capernaum, but with very little factual basis. Like many of the sites of Jesus’ ministry, its exact location is unknown.

MOUNT OF BEATITUDES. A slope on the NW shore of the Sea of Galilee where Jesus delivered the Beatitudes.

The Beatitudes are a small part of the Sermon on the Mount or the plain (Matt 5:3-12; Luke 6:20-23). Apart from Matthew’s statements that Jesus was on a mountain (5:1; 8:1) and Luke’s account that the sermon was on a level place (6:17), the only other help in locating the site is the record that Jesus went from there directly to Capernaum. The older suggested location was the Horns of Hattim seven m. W of Tiberias. Now the more popular site is the slope up from the Sea of Galilee SW of Capernaum. There is a Catholic church in this place.
