Manegold of Lautenbach

c.1030-c.1103. Roman Catholic scholar. Born at Lautenbach, he entered the monastery there, and when followers of Henry IV ravaged it in 1086 he fled to the cloister of Raitenbuch, Bavaria, where he became dean. Later he assumed priorship of the monastery at Marbach, Alsace. His fame and consequent difficulty with the imperial party stems from his staunch defense of papal policy in the Investiture Controversy.* In Manegoldi ad Gebhardum liber he defined kingship as based on a contract between monarch and subjects which becomes void by royal breach. Hence the pope legitimately dissolved the German oath to Henry IV, argued Manegold. Opusculum contra Wolfelmum Coloniensem indicates the danger of studying pagan classics. In 1096 Manegold was delegate to the Synod of Tours, and in 1098 he was an imperial prisoner.
