Malchion of Antioch
FL. c.270. Christian rhetorician. As presbyter and leading teacher of rhetoric in Antioch he opposed his own bishop, Paul of Samosata,* at the Synod of Antioch in 269, where the latter's view that Christ was by nature merely an ordinary man was condemned. Paul, bishop since 260, was deposed and excommunicated. Eusebius records portions of the actual debate. Jerome further reports that Malchion also drafted the long encyclical announcing the synod's decision.
