Louis Marie Olivier Duchesne

1843-1922. French archaeologist and church historian. Born in Saint-Servan, he read theology in Rome and developed archaeological and patristic interests under G.B. de Rossi, with whom he edited the Martyrology of St. Jerome. Ordained priest in 1867, he lectured in schools for six years, then served as a member of the French archaeological school of Rome (1874-76), overseeing work in Epirus, Thessaly, Mt. Athos, and Asia Minor. He was to return to the school as director in 1895, a post he held till his death. Holding the chair of church history at the Institut Catholique in Paris (1877-85), he resigned because of opposition to his views on pre-Nicene doctrine and the founding of the French Church. Member of the French Academy from 1910, Duchesne's publications include Histoire ancienne de l'Église chrétienne (3 vols., 1906- 10); studies on Macarius Magnes and Liber Pontificalis; Les Fastes épiscopaux de l'ancienne Gaule (3 vols., 1894-1915); and L'Église au sixième siècle (1925).
