Louis Bourgeois

1510-1561. French Protestant musician. Invited to come to Geneva about the time of Calvin's return in 1541, he four years later took the place of Guillaume LeFrenc as chief musician of the city. In 1551, because of some of the tunes he published, he was imprisoned, but was released on the plea of Calvin. In 1557, apparently unable to withstand the rigorous attitude of the Genevan city fathers, he returned to Paris, where he died. In 1547 he produced a harmonization of Clement Marot's* psalms, using some currently popular tunes, some from the psalter of Strasbourg, and some which he himself composed.
