Julius Wilhelm Martin Kaftan

1848-1926. German Protestant theologian. Educated at Erlangen, Berlin, and Kiel, he later taught at the universities of Basle (1873-83) and Berlin (from 1883). Strongly influenced by Ritschl, Kaftan stressed personal religious experience and the historical revelation in Christ. The Atonement was interpreted in mystical and ethical categories, rejecting any idea of satisfaction or need for God's reconciliation with man (rather than the reverse).
